Head for the Trees!
• For one special night the world’s canopy & climbing community are uniting to sleep high in the trees and we’re inviting you to join in and raise money to purchase critically threatened rainforest through the World Land Trust.
• Dernwood Farm invite you to spend a night in our ancient woodland for a unique opportunity to sling a hammock, tarp or tree tent within our woodland and support this global event
• The money that is given to the World Land Trust, in my estimation, has more effect on the wild world than almost anything I can think of.

Spend two days in beautiful woodland making hand built pottery using locally dug ‘raw’ Sussex clay, including clay that we’ll dig on the day. Cost: £130 Booking info here: www.nativehands.co.uk/courses-homepage/wild-pottery/ Day 1: learn how to find and select clay in the landscape, how to collect it and make it usable. You’ll make an item or two of your choice: for example a small pot, a figurine, an oil lamp. Technical assistance will be on hand. You’ll learn about making and adding various inclusions to strengthen your pottery enough for it to withstand the thermal shock of being fired in an open fire. Day 2: we’ll fire the pots, foraging some of the fuel from the woodland site. You’ll learn how to fire your pots successfully in an open fire. It’s an exciting process to take part in and really magical to witness clay being transformed by fire. In the afternoon, you’ll learn how to make your own fire without matches, using ancient percussive and friction methods, while we keep an eye on our pots and wait for them to cool enough so they can be taken home at the end of the day. You never know exactly how your pots will turn out so it’s always a thrill. This course provides an in-depth understanding of all the processes involved in making wild pottery, and will give you a hands-on appreciation of the origins of this craft. We’ll also have time set aside for connecting to the beautiful surroundings, making the weekend a nourishing as well as a learning experience. Suitable for all levels including beginners. Places limited to a maximum of just 10 people. "Really, really enjoyed those two days – we all felt very refreshed and inspired. I have my little pot on my desk to remind me of the wonderful experience.” Simon M, Accommodation: camping is available for course attendees on the Saturday night (although the cost of camping is not included in the price of the course). When you book your place on this course you will be sent details of how to book for camping. Early booking is recommended. A great way to have a truly immersive weekend!

Can't wait to get stuck in to Wild Pottery again soon. Working with clay like this has an amazing effect on people; it's unlike any other material I use. So utterly absorbing, satisfying and grounding. I think something deeply primal in us is touched by handling clay dug straight from the ground. And the excitement of seeing what you've made glowing red hot in the fire as it's transformed... it's just mesmerising. So... come and join us for the next course in April. The August course is fully booked and the June course has only a couple of spaces left... so grab your chance to experience this amazing process while you can. We'll be at Dernwood Farm Wild Campsite, in their beautiful woods, where the land yields a particularly nice clay. You'll find all the details here: www.nativehands.co.uk/courses-homepage/wild-pottery/

We had a great time at the weekend making bramble & wild rose frame baskets in the gorgeous woods at Dernwood Farm Wild Campsite. The camp fire kept us warm and cheery as we dodged the raindrops. A few scratches on the hands are inevitable, working with these materials... and with a satisfying symmetry, one participant had brought some rose hip hand salve she'd made for us to use at the end of each day. The course is running again Dec5/6th if you missed it this time. All details via this link: www.nativehands.co.uk/courses-homepage/bramble-wild-rose/ And looking forward to offering it again at Dernwood next spring...
